This kayak trail follows Sugar Hill Creek to the Combahee River, along the way passing signs of the former rice culture, a botanically-rich ecosystem, birds and maybe even an alligator. 

Plan your trip around the tides; the shipwrecks are visible at low tide. With two access points, there are multiple options for planning a trip on this trail. With the right planning, you can treat this trip as a park and paddle, or you can paddle between the access points with the tides.

Paddle through history along this trail, which incorporates a number of shipwrecks and archaeological landings dating from the early 18th century to early 20th century visible at low tide in the upper reaches of the Ashley River Blue Trail. The Ashley is also a South Carolina Scenic River. 

The Brown's Bait and Tackle Shop can be used as a put in and take out to paddle around Berry Shoals Pond. The pond is flatwater.

This paddle trail is entirely within the boundary of the Old Santee Canal Park and consists of a three mile loop on Biggin Creek, including a portion of the original Santee Canal. While the paddle trail is well suited for paddles of all experience, the trail presents an excellent opportunity for beginning paddlers to enjoy a pleasant afternoon of paddling. Rental canoes may be used for a modest fee at the park. The area is primarily forested with cypress trees, has several species of flowering water plants and provides a home for many wading birds. An excellent choice for first time paddlers as canoes are rented on site. You will find wading birds, osprey, songbirds and wood ducks.

If a shorter trip is desired, the location of Pine Tree Landing provides the option of breaking this 10-mile section (from Pump House Landing to Pea House Landing) into two separate five-mile trips, with Pine Tree serving as the take out or the put in.  Pine Tree Landing is a public access site with a parking area, dock, and boat ramp; it's on the north side of the river on a side channel, and not easily seen from the main channel of Black River. The landing is located at the end of Pine Tree Landing Road off Big Dam Swamp Road. 

Tides will affect rivers flows downstream of the SC Hwy 41 Bridge. The tides will affect the speed of flows and travel times for paddlers on this trip and any other river trips further downstream. The timing of the tides affecting this river trip are estimated to be about one-hour delayed from the tide schedule presented at the NOAA tide station, Mt. Pleasant Plantation, Black River. This tide station is located on the Black River about two miles downstream of Pea House Landing.  

The USGS streamflow station, Black River Near Andrews, provides information to describe river flows and water-level conditions on the Black River.

Travel along a beautiful blackwater river with opportunities to explore side channels into adjacent swamps with large cypress trees and rich in widlife.

This section requires portaging the Neal Shoals Dam to get to the Neal Shoals Dam River Access and Parking Area. Although a very short and easy section, portaging the Dam may be strenuous for families with young children.

The trip ends at Harbison State Forest, with more than 2,000 acres and 30 miles of trails to explore on foot or on a mountain bike. Be sure to contact the forest office to file a float plan and gain access to the canoe launch. 

The water is easily navigable. This trip was rated moderate because of the long distance and relative remoteness. It is recommended that at least one person in the group have paddling experience. 

The Broad River tumbles over many small shoals and threads its way around forested islands along this scenic and secluded stretch. You are almost guaranteed to spot a Bald Eagle along this stretch of river. 

Good day paddle through Congaree National Park on a blackwater creek provides solitude and adventure. Paddlers travel past oaks and immense loblolly pines of near record proportions growing on either side of the creek.

Paddlers can use this access and paddle either up or downstream. The stream alternates between tight and winding to open, lake-like sections. Many species of birds are common, as well as river otters. Some trees may be fallen across the stream, requiring portage. Use caution when navigating or portaging around fallen trees. The Cedar Creek USGS streamflow gage gives current flow conditions, which can be compared to this chart for expected conditions.

For those looking to rent a canoe or kayak and paddle on your own, a number of outfitters in Columbia have rentals. 

Good park and paddle opportunity in Congaree National Park on a blackwater creek provides solitude for viewing wildlife and a bottomland forest ecosystem. Paddlers may see a large variety of birds, wildlife and vegetation. River otters are common along some sections of Cedar Creek.

This trip allows paddlers to explore the wilder eastern section of the park and float down the Congaree River. As the creek winds its way towards the Congaree, it travels through some of the oldest forest remaining in the park. Here you can see immense bald cypress and towering tupelos dripping with Spanish moss. Cedar Creek makes a sharp bend to the left where Horsepen Gut enters the stream, approximately four miles from the landing. Three miles beyond this point is Mazyck's Cut, where Cedar Creek enters the river. A wooden sign post points the way and three trail markers guide paddlers to the river. Once on the river, you can make a leisurely float downstream to the Route-601 Landing, passing the banks of the park on river left. Camping is available within Congaree National Park with a backcountry camping permit. Camping is also possible on sand bars along the Congaree River at lower stream flows. Some trees may be fallen across the stream, requiring portage. Use caution when navigating or portaging around fallen trees. The float time is highly dependent on the flow conditions and the number of obstacles required for portage.

This is a wilderness paddle through Congaree National Park to the Congaree River. Approximately 6 miles of this paddle are on Cedar Creek through Congaree National Park, with the remainder of the trip on the Congaree River. This trip is best completed as an overnight, though it is possible to do it in a long day.

Experience the beauty of the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River. Section 2 is a good beginner whitewater section with class I and II rapids. 

There are a number of commercial rafting guides in the area if you want to experience the Chattooga River's classic whitewater. 

This is one of the most well-known sections of whitewater in the US. Section IV includes major whitewater, including Five Falls, a set of five Class IV-V rapids within 1/3 of a mile.

360-acre Lake Juniper and the surrounding cypress wetlands can be explored by canoe and kayak. The park offers canoe, kayak, and SUP rentals. Be sure to check out the Moonlight Canoe Floats happening through the summer and fall for a unique paddling experience! 

Noteworthy on this trip is rich lushness of the banks and the feeling of untouched wilderness.Small alligators and anhinga are common sightings on this trip.

Croft State Park is a state park located near the town of Spartanburg in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The park is located on land that was used for a US Army training camp and prisoner-of-war camp in World War II known as Camp Croft. Lake Craig is a flatwater reservoir with scenic, quiet views. 

This trip begins on Echaw Creek and ends on the Santee River. Echaw Creek is primarily bordered by cypress swamp, other than some high ground on the right side of the stream. The east bank of the stream is private property, and the west side is National Forest property. 

Once to the Santee River, you will come to Battery Warren approximately one half of a mile from where the creek joins the river. Battery Warren is a picturesque stop with nice river views from the original earth mounds of the civil war fort, as well as plaques that detail the fort’s history. An easy half of an hour paddle below Battery Warren you will come to McConnell’s Landing on your right bank.

Echaw Creek contains some of the largest and oldest cypress trees you will see in Berkeley County. Wildlife is abundant in this area, with white-tailed deer and wood duck spotted frequently.

Some trees may be blocking the main channel, so depending on the flow, there may be portages required. This is a rural paddle on a beautiful flat stretch of blackwater. The banks are covered with oak, bald cypress and water tupelo, among other trees. There are opportunities to explore oxbow lakes and swampy areas when the water is higher. 

On paddling time for any given section can vary significantly depending upon water levels, obstacles, stoppage time, group pace, and other factors.  Typical speeds for the ERCK Trail range between 1.5 and 3.5 MPH

Foster Creek has great opportunities to see wading birds and wildflowers. Trip should be planned with the tides.

A few things you might want to know, from the guides: 

• The water level in our swamp is dependent upon rain fall. Accordingly, canoe trips are subject to the availability of ENOUGH WATER!
• During the off-season, canoe trips can be scheduled by reservation only on any day that all of the following conditions are met:  1) there is sufficient water, 2) there is a guide available, 3) there are at least 5 people in your party or you are willing to pay for 5 people, and 4) you call in advance to make the arrangements.
• It is recommended you have some canoeing experience. A lot of maneuvering between cypress knees, through narrow creek channels and to avoid POISON IVY will be required! It's man vs. nature at its finest!
• Reservations are required in advance! Sign up early. Canoe trips are very popular attractions and space fills up fast!
• NO alcoholic beverages are allowed! There are no bathrooms in the swamp!
• NO pets are allowed! Your family pet may be an alligator's next meal!!!
• NO bug spray! You won't need it and we'll tell you why when you get here!

Guided Canoe/Kayak tours can be arranged with Francis Beidler Forest. They offer naturalist guided paddling among 1,000-year-old cypress trees - the largest remaining stand of virgin bald cypress and tupelo gum in the world - deep into the heart of the Francis Beidler Forest in Four Holes Swamp.

Upon leaving the launching ramp, a short paddle to your right will bring you to the dam that separates the impoundment from the Goose Creek tidal flow. The area between the landing to the dam provides an excellent fishery for bluegills and speckled perch. You will often find boats fishing in this area. The reservoir extends 4 miles from the dam north where it passes under NAD Road, almost to Highway 52 at the Goose Creek city limits. While the south end of the reservoir is mostly open marsh lands, the north end of the impoundment has a significant amount of high ground and housing. About a half mile above the landing on the eastern shore you will come to an area of small trees that provide nesting for a large rookery of snowy egrets and white ibis in season. A little patience can result in some excellent photographs of these beautiful wading birds. In recent years, the reservoir was heavily clogged with floating water hyacinth and other aquatic plants. Recent efforts have greatly reduced the problem, and it will not interfere with your paddle trip. Throughout the reservoir, you will see many wading birds and small alligators.

Because the reservoir is generally an open body of water, it offers very little protection from winds. If the winds are excessive it should not be attempted by inexperienced paddlers.

Lake Cunningham Recreation Area can be used as a put in and take out to paddle around Lake Cunningham.  The lake is flatwater.

Souls Harbor is the first of many river accesses on Lake Greenwood. Paddlers and boaters can use this lake access as a start and end point, traveling around Lake Greenwood and up the Saluda River. Boaters will see wide open flat water.

This trip from Keowee-Toxaway State Park gives a paddler the chance to explore the upper end of Lake Keowee, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Paddle up a finger of the lake to the mouth of Eastatoe Creek, a beautiful mountain stream and popular trout fishery. 

There are two boat ramps available for accessing the lake on opposite sides of the park. 

Santee State Park sits on the shores of Lake Marion, the largest lake in South Carolina. There are diverse paddling opportunities; you can venture out into big water, hug the wooded shoreline, or float through a flooded cypress forest. 

This paddle offers several miles of cypress shoreline as well as numerous islands and sandbars, some suited for primitive camping. Wading birds, osprey and wood ducks are common in this area.

This area of Lake Moultrie is protected by a series of dikes and islands.  There are many places to fish and watch wildlife, such as alligators and wading birds.

Enter a nearly enclosed by known as the Duck Pond to explore large cypress swamp and abundant plant and animal life. A small sandy beach provides an opportunities for resting, swimming, or camping. 

Construction began on the Santee Canal in 1793. It operated from its completion in 1800 through 1850. The original canal used a series of 10 locks to move laden vessels from the Santee River to the Cooper River and subsequently down the Cooper River to the antebellum City of Charleston. Designed by competent engineers of the day, including General George Washington, the Santee Canal served as a primary system for transporting goods from midland South Carolina to Charleston. In the mid 1800’s, the canal fell into disuse due to the advent of the steam train and a period of extended drought in the area. Of the original 22 miles of the canal, most of the system was consumed by Lake Moultrie upon completion of the dam in November 1941. When one equates the massive amounts of materials moved by hand to create the canal, the enormity of the project is mind-boggling. Paddling the canal creates a sense of the history of Berkeley County.

The Santee Canal is a beautiful two and one half mile section of the canal that can be accessed by canoe or kayak from Angel’s Cove on the western boundary of the Sandy Beach Wildlife Refuge. It is a black water canal bordered by moss-laden cypress trees. It appears uniformly about 20 yards in width and maintains a depth of 4 to 5 feet.

Lake Robinson Boat Ramp can be used as a put in and take out to paddle around Lake Robinson.  The lake is flatwater.

This exciting intermediate stretch of Lawson's Fork Creek includes Class II and III rapids. Because this creek is narrow, paddlers should use caution and expect to encounter strainers or woody debris along the way. Skilled paddlers will enjoy this short stretch of the creek and should expect to encounter a variety of exciting rapids, especially at higher water flows.

This stretch of Lawson's Fork Creek can vary in difficulty from Class II to IV rapids depending on water flow. Experienced paddlers can expect to encounter exciting rapids along a narrow channel as well as some shoals. Although the majority of this stretch doesn't include many rapids, only experienced paddlers should paddle this section due to a few larger rapids that would pose significant hazard to inexperienced paddlers. Be aware of possible woody debris and strainers.

This trip begins on Lawson's Fork Creek and ends at Pacolet Mills along the Pacolet River. The majority of this stretch of the Pacolet River includes lazy waters with occasional Class I rapids as the river approaches the town of Pacolet Mills. The downstream Upper and Lower Pacolet Shoals Dams create lake-like paddling conditions as the river gets closer to Pacolet Mills. This stretch is primarily rural in scenery.

The current is swift but can be easily navigated by intermediate skilled paddlers and the boater will have to watch out for downfall and strainers. Be on the lookout for signs of beaver activity and feeding stations (small piles (scatter) of clam shells where animals have been feeding) indicating otter or raccoon activity. On a warm day you may see a black snake on an exposed portion of a pointbar.

The first couple of miles are flat and calm on cold, clear water. After crossing under the I-26 bridge, the river is a series of shoals and rapids. There are great opportunities to picnic on rocks and look for river otters at shoals. There's an island just downstream of the I-26 bridge. Each side of the island contains class II-III rapids, O Brother Rapid to river right, Ocean Boulevard Rapids to river left. A mile downstream is Stacey's Ledge, followed by Mill Race Rapids (class III-IV), which are favorite play spots for whitewater kayakers.

CAUTION:  Mill Race Rapids can be dangerous, especially at high water, and could cause injury to you, your boat, or your possessions. If you are not an experienced whitewater boater, portage these rapids. NOTE THE FOLLOWING CHANGE for portage around Mill Race Rapids: 

 Because of construction activities, the traditional portage trail (shown on the map) is CLOSED and may remain closed for one year (beginning December 2023).  During this closure, the alternative portage trail around Mill Race Rapids is the Saluda Riverwalk.Take out upstream of Mill Race Rapids on the left bank (north side) of the river and use the Saluda Riverwalk to safely carry around Mill Race Rapids.

Below Mill Race Rapids, you will pass under the pedestrian bridge at the zoo, then on to more class II-III rapids at Shannon, Whitehouse, and Hampton Street Rapids before reaching the Gervais Street bridge where there are take-outs at either side of the Congaree River just below the bridge.

MORE CAUTION:  Water conditions on the Lower Saluda River can be dangerous to all river users. Before entering this river be aware that operations at the upstream Lake Murray Dam can cause river conditions to change rapidly and produce strong currents, cold water, and large rapids.

• Lower Saluda River water is cold, about 60 degrees F, because it comes from deep within Lake Murray. Swimmers can experience hypothermia, even in the summer if you're not prepared.
• River rapids, up to Class IV, begin downstream of the I-26 bridge. Many rapids can produce large hydraulics as river flows increase.
• All river users who are boating, swimming, or wading should wear life jackets.

      Before paddling, check the Dominion Energy websitefor planned Lake Murray Dam operations and flows to the Lower Saluda. If the flows are high (yellow or red flow range) and you are an experienced whitewater paddler, then take the necessary safety precautions; otherwise, stay off the river.

Note, this trip can be extended to other take out points on the Congaree River downstream of downtown Columbia. However, the Thomas Newman Landing, about three miles downstream of Gervais Street Bridge, is the last public access for another 50 miles.

This section of the Lower Saluda Scenic River lets you experience scenic whitewater right in Columbia. A series of rapids and shoals lead you to downtown Columbia, which offers a refreshing splash and a dose of adventure on a hot summer day.

This stretch is mostly straight, flat and leisurely. Corley Island is about one mile from the put-in. A smaller channel splits off the the left, while the main channel stays to the right over a small shoal.

CAUTION:  Be aware that water conditions on the Lower Saluda River can be dangerous. Operations at the upstream Lake Murray Dam can cause river conditions to change rapidly and produce strong, swift currents in cold water.

     Lower Saluda River water is cold, about 60 degrees F, because it comes from deep within Lake Murray. Swimmers can experience hypothermia, even in the summer if you're not prepared.

The upper section of the Lower Saluda Scenic River is a quiet stretch of river nestled right in Columbia. The water, coming from the bottom of the Lake Murray Dam, is cold and clear, and holds a good trout fishery.

This trip starts at Half Moon Landing on the Lynches River, where you will paddle down through the swampy blackwater that splits off into multiple creeks, including Mill Creek and Clark's Creek. This trip is best completed as an overnight. Camping in the swamp requires finding high ground, and is best in the season when mosquitoes are gone. 

This section of the trail could be difficult to navigate at high water due to multiple channels through the swampy lowlands. It is recommended that you download the GPX data for your GPS if navigating this trip for the first time, especially during high water levels. This trip is a part of the SC Revolutionary Rivers Water Trail, a National Recreation Trail. This overnight trip will have you paddle through the black water, cypress-lined banks of the Lynches River and Mill Creek, and camping in the middle of Revolutionary War history. The area was once traversed by Patriots engaged in guerrilla warfare against the Loyalists. General Francis Marion's militia, mounted on sure-footed Marsh Tacky horses were able to navigate through the region, leaving the Loyalists far behind.

This is a good blackwater trip for beginner paddlers and a relaxing trip for those with experience. 

This is a great trip for beginner paddlers to experience the beauty of the Lynches River blackwater. The trip starts at the Lynches River Park, which has many amenities, including canoe rentals and a shuttle service. 

This trip starts at Venters Landing, just north of Johnsonville, on the Lynches River, where you will paddle down through the swampy blackwater that splits off into multiple creeks, including Mill Creek and Clark's Creek. You will take Mill Creek to the south. 

Snow's Island, near the take-out at Snow's Lake, is on the National Register of Historic Places because of it's significant role as a critical revolutionary war campsite for General Marion. 

This section of the trail could be difficult to navigate at high water due to multiple channels through the swampy lowlands. It is recommended that you download the GPX data for your GPS if navigating this trip for the first time, especially during high water levels. This trip is a part of the SC Revolutionary Rivers Water Trail, a National Recreation Trail. Paddle through the black water, cypress-lined banks of the Lynches River and Mill Creek. The SC Revolutionary Rivers Trail offers paddlers an unique experience of floating through the scenic swampland that was once traversed by Patriots engaged in guerrilla warfare against the Loyalists. This section is on the Middle Saluda River and includes a few stretches of Class II and III rapids. There is a high potential for woody debris; paddlers should use caution at all times.

This is an advanced section with Class II-V Rapids on the Middle Saluda River. Paddlers will experience narrow chutes requiring technical skill in this boulder-infested stretch of river. Be aware of woody debris - because this stretch of the river is classified as a state trout stream, the removal of woody debris is prohibited.

There are sections of rapids ranging from Class II to Class IV along this section of the Middle Saluda River. Beginning in the Jones Gap State Park, paddlers can expect to see mountain river backdrops, rural countryside, and pristine waters, intermixed with technically challenging rapids.

Along this stretch, the Middle and South Saluda Rivers converge directly downstream of the put in; one mile before the take out, the South and North Saluda Rivers converge. Because this stretch of river is very curvy, there is a high potential for woody debris; paddlers should use caution at all times.

This section on the North Saluda River includes some Class II-III rapids. There is a high potential for woody debris in this section. Woody debris and other strainers can constantly change - use cation and try to avoid strainers when possible. Because there are not any good take outs between these two river accesses, this trip is very long and could be difficult to complete.

Close to the headwaters of the North Saluda River, this stretch is narrow and can be unpaddleable in low water. Paddlers can expect to see heavily wooded areas as well as rural mountain countryside.

The pristine waters of this section on the North Saluda River take paddlers through rural mountain countryside. Short in distance, this trip is quick and beginner friendly.

This section is on the North Tyger River and includes many curves in the river, and includes some exciting shoals/rapids. There is a high potential for wood and debris strainers along this stretch.

This popular stretch is paddled annually by families during the Tame The Tyger event hosted by the Tyger River Foundation. A great family section, this trip boasts exciting Class II rapids and shoals. Paddlers will also see the confluence of the North and South Tyger Rivers, forming the main stem of the Tyger River along this trip.

This is a very popular paddling trip on the Pacolet River with Class I and II rapids. Paddlers can expect to see a combination of slow slow moving water and short sections of rapids along rural scenery.

This section of the Pacolet River requires portaging the Clifton I and II Dams. Portage is available river-right around both dams. Paddlers can expect to encounter a few Class I rapids along this industrial stretch of the Pacolet River.

This lengthy but lazy trip is characterized by slow moving waters, rural scenery, and culturally significant points of interest, including Grindall and Skull Shoals. This trip is suitable for novice paddlers who want an extended day trip.

As the lazy, slower moving waters of the Pacolet River encounter the clear, wide channel of the Broad River, paddlers can expect to encounter very rural scenery and a variety of wildlife. This lengthy trip ends in Lockhart, SC along the Broad River, just before the Lockhart Dam.

This trip is flatwater and very family friendly. Visitors to Paris Mountain State Park can rent canoes, kayaks, or pedal boats to explore Lake Placid, a small lake with a swimming area. 

A shorter version of this trip can be done by using the Dunham Bluff Landing. 

This is a full day or overnight paddle along the Great Pee Dee River, one of South Carolina's most mighty rivers.  In this section, the river starts relatively straight, providing a leisurely float past densely forested banks. After Dunham's Bluff, the river begins to wind and twist around tight bends and large sand bars. This section is a part of the SC Revolutionary Rivers Water Trail and is a State Scenic River. 

Paddlers and boaters alike can expect clear open waters, with the opportunity to travel around Saluda Lake at their own leisure.

This is an leisurely float along a secluded stretch of the Saluda River between Lake Greenwood and Lake Murray. Expect mostly flat water with a few small riffles that make for good lunch spots. 

This is a scenic and leisurely float along the Saluda River between Lake Greenwood and Lake Murray. Expect mostly flat water with a few small shoals. The area is very rural with little development along the river. 

This trip is rated as moderate, as it is suggested that you or someone in your party have canoe experience to navigate the twisting waterway. 

Aiken State Park provides an opportunity to paddle a short but beautiful stretch of the most remote of the Edisto's forks. The twisting blackwater river stays shaded underneath a tunnel of tree canopy. The park maintains a canoe path through down vegetation. 

This short section on the South Saluda River is a great beginner-friendly mountain river paddling experience.

This section of the South Tyger River can be difficult at low water levels due to shallow waters and numerous wood and debris strainers. There are few Class I rapids along this trip. 

Along this section, paddlers will travel from the South Tyger River onto the main stem of the Tyger River, experiencing exciting Class I-IV rapids along the way. This section is recommended only for advanced paddlers.

This stretch is primarily flatwater as the South Tyger River enters Berry Shoals Pond. Beginner friendly and short, this trip can be done in a half day or less.

Trail Sections and Camping

The sections are in order from top to bottom. Alternate access points and campsites are shown on the map if you are interested in a shorter, or slightly different trip. A few tips for camping: wear bright orange clothing from October 1 to January 1 due to hunting season on the Sandy Beach site and  any other area designated for hunting season. Only build fires in designated fire rings, do not cut trees, and leave the site cleaner than you found it.​ Follow the Leave No Trace Severn Principles.

Stump Hole Section

The trail starts at the top of Lake Marion, where you can choose a route to the right along the shore, or explore Stump Hole Swamp, to the left. You will continue to the to Santee State Park on the right shoreline, where you can camp for the first night. To ensure a campsite, make reservations through the park. 

Eutaw Section

This section of the trail offers two very historic sites for history buffs. First, Eutaw Springs Battle Field is near Eutaw Creek on your right before the camp site. You can visit the battle field by paddling into the creek, take out at Bell's Marina, walk a short distance to Hwy 6, and a take a short walk to your left. Second, the ruins of Old Ferguson Mill  (1800's) are visible as you follow the trail towards the Chimney Island section. 

Chimney Island Section

A must see side trip on the section is Church Island which is a  former church site and grave yard. This section winds between islands, and alternates between wooded sections and views of open water. Camping is on Chimney Island. 

Cross Section

This section takes you through the Diversion Canal into Lake Moultrie. You will then wind around to the north. There are two possible campsites at the end of this section. One is at the mouth of the Old Santee Canal, which operated from it's completion in 1800 through 1850. Today there remains a beautiful two and a half mile section of the black water canal bordered by moss laden cypress trees.

Jungle Section

The Jungle” is an enclosed Tupelo swamp presenting an appearance much like the famed Okefenokee Swamp of Georgia, albeit on a smaller scale. The primary forestation in these waters is Tupelo, with some cypress growth near the forested boundaries. The waters themselves are heavily grown with fragrant water lilies, in season, as well as lotus plants and various grasses. At the north eastern corner of the lake, head south to Hines Dr Landing. 

This is a multi-day paddling trip with designated camping sites; if completed from start to finish, you get five days of great paddling on Lakes Marion & Moultrie and four nights camping along the waterways. The scenery along the trail varies from cypress filled swamps, historic mills and church sites, to big views of open water.

Table Rock State Park has two lakes with paddling opportunities, both with the dramatic backdrop of Table Rock and the Blue Ridge mountains, one of the most iconic scenes in South Carolina. Canoe and Kayak rentals are available.

This section of the Twelve Mile River begins on Town Creek and is very short. There is a high chance for woody debris in this section; paddlers should use caution and avoid strainers at all times. This stretch is narrow but scenic and beginner friendly.

Town Creek Park can be used as a beginning and end point, allowing paddlers to experience the exciting whitewater rapids along this creek and run laps - fun for an exciting tubing trip.

Beginning at Town Creek Park in Pickens, this stretch includes some exciting whitewater  There is a high potential for woody debris in this section. Paddling may be difficult in lower water levels, especially during the summer months.

A very popular whitewater destination, this section is highly utilized by whitewater paddlers and especially popular after rain events. With nearly 4 miles of exciting Class II-III rapids, paddlers can expect to see many ledges and whitewater in this heavily bouldered stretch.

As the Twelve Mile River nears Lake Hartwell, its waters begin to pick up in speed. There are a few Class I and II rapids along this scenic stretch of the River.

This trip begins at the popular Tyger 10 Nature Park along the main stem of the Tyger River and includes exciting Class I-II rapids and shoals. This shorter trip is great for novice paddlers and is the last section along the Tyger River Blueway.

Paddlers can expect mostly flat water with an occasional Class I rapid along the way. This trip is very beginner friendly and takes paddlers from the Saluda River into the clear wide channels of Lake Greenwood.

Paddlers can use this river access as a start and end point, paddling upstream or downstream as desired. Water may be swift following rain events, making upstream travel more difficult. Portage is not available around the Holliday Dam, so re-enter the river below the dam at the Holliday Dam Road river access.

This trip features lazy waters, wide river channels, and is perfect for beginners. Although the trip is longer in length, it makes for a great day trip and only has one or two small rapids that can become Class II in higher waters.

River access at Erwin Mill Road is limited to the road right-of-way beside the bridge only. Do not use the path through the woods, it is private property.

With many shoals at the Erwin Mill Road bridge, this trip starts off with exciting rapids. Paddlers will see a variety of wooded areas, rural countryside, and an abundance of wildlife. This short trip is perfect for experiencing Class II rapids.

This exciting trip features Class I-II rapids, many shoals, and wide river channels. While rapids are not Class III, they can become more technical in very high and very low waters.

This trip is the first along the main stem of the Saluda River and is scenic and quiet with very slow moving waters. As the Saluda River enters Saluda Lake, the channels broaden and the water stills. Scenery includes wildlife, great fishing locations, and rural countryside.

Alternate River Access: Saluda Lake Access off of Buckskin Road, Easley, SC

This trip is characterized by the granite outcrop shoals along the Irvin Pitts Memorial park. Paddlers can expect to utilize their technical maneuvering skills to navigate this exciting and heavily bouldered area. There are sections of flat water mixed in with rapids making this stretch of the river an exciting challenge.

Paddlers should use this river access as a start and end point, traveling upstream or downstream at your own leisure. Slow moving and flat water characterize this stretch.

Although this trip is considered Novice in terms of rapid difficulty, it requires portage around two dams and may not be well suited for families with young children, inexperienced paddlers, or those unable to carry boats along primitive trails.

There are a few Class I and II rapids along this stretch, but as the river nears Ware Shoals, the channels become clear, wide, and still, impounded by the downstream Ware Shoals Dam.

Because there is no portage around the Piedmont Dam (upstream of Timmerman Landing) or the Upper Pelzer Mills Dam (downstream of Timmerman Landing), this section is very lake-like and beginner-friendly. Paddlers can travel upstream or downstream, using Timmerman Landing as a start and end point.

Numerous side cuts along Wadboo Creek provide the opportunity to extend or cut short your paddle, or just explore the smaller waterways, which extend into the marshland and old rice fields. You may see an abundance of birds, especially wading birds, ducks, and osprey. Small alligators may also be encountered throughout this area. Fishing is good for large bluegills and redbreast.

Tides are about 2.5 to 3 hours behind Charleston Harbor.

Leisurely paddle through the swampy flatwater of Lower Wadboo Creek. Excellent wildlife viewing and tidal mud flats.

Well worth the effort, this lovely cypress swamp is much as it was over two centuries ago when Francis Marion and his Brigade of men frequented the area. Paddle point-to-point, or as a park-and-paddle from the Dennis Landing at Wadboo Bridge. 

Wambaw Creek is a black water tidal creek located in the Francis Marion National Forest. It meanders through the Wambaw Creek Wilderness Area created in 1980. This trip can be run either upstream or downstream using the tide direction.

Downstream of the HWY 1 Landing, a paddler will begin a 44 mile trip with little signs of human presence. Once you cross under Interstate 20, the Wateree winds its way through a vast floodplain with a wilderness feeling on the river. This paddle must be completed over multiple days, but the very sinuous Wateree River offers nice sand bars for camping at the right water levels. 

The canoe trail at Woods Bay is subject to fluctuating water levels. At times the waters are too low for navigation. Please contact the park directly for current trail conditions.

Private canoes and kayaks are allowed in the park. Canoe rentals are also available. Admission to the park is free. 

The 1-mile marked canoe trail at Woods Bay State Park will guide you through part of one of the last remaining intact Carolina Bays, a unique landform in the Coastal Plain region. Eighty-one bird species in several unique habitats have been reported within the park. See wildlife such as alligators, herons, egrets, and osprey and unique flora such as the bladderwort and the insect-eating pitcher plant.
