What to Expect

This section requires portaging the Neal Shoals Dam to get to the Neal Shoals Dam River Access and Parking Area. Although a very short and easy section, portaging the Dam may be strenuous for families with young children.

A small parking area and boat ramp are located river-right.

Take out:
Neal Shoals Dam River Access and Parking Area
Access Details

The Broad River can be accessed by portaging boats 500 feet from the parking area. This river access can be used to avoid portaging the Neal Shoals Dam.

Trip Details

This trip is very short. Upon reaching the Neal Shoals Dam, paddlers should stick to the left side of the river, exiting before the buoy line. A short portage will bring you to the parking area which is at the end of Shoals Road.

Alternative River Access: Woods Ferry Recreation Area (Park Road, Carlisle, SC 29031 - [34.698880, -81.450655]). Open year-round and features restrooms, boat ramp, camping and picnic areas, horse trails, and accommodations and hot showers.  Fee for camping is required and can be paid upon arrival.  Click here for more information.
