Congaree Creek

Congaree Creek is a small blackwater creek in Lexington County that flows into the Congaree River downstream of Columbia. Paddling on Congaree Creek is tight and twisty, and can be challenging due to swift currents and downed trees spanning the river. However, the paddling can be very rewarding and provides an almost wilderness experience that is very easily accessible from the Columbia area. Alligators inhabit Congaree Creek and the surrounding floodplain, as do many different species of birds and other wildlife.

Congaree Creek flows through Congaree Creek Heritage Preserve, an SCDNR property. The preserve protects sites that reveal an incredible 12,000 years of history.
