Trip Details

The boater will notice a wider channel in this section of the river with some very white sandy pointbars at low water levels. This sand is white, well sorted quartz similar to what is found on our coastal beaches. As you float this section keep an eye out for birds of prey such as owls, hawks and kites. One may notice a regenerating future forest behind a narrow vegetative buffer on both sides of the river. Be on the lookout for a beaver lodge.

Hwy 9 is listed as a drop in launch/landing but it's very difficult to walk from the bridge abutment to the edge of the river and can be flooded at higher river levels. Not recommended.

Paddled on 12/2/2021. River level 5.95 ft Dillon gauge, https://waterdata.usgs.gov/sc/nwis/current/?type=flow, This level is low water. River was open and doable at this level. Trees and debris in water, occasional submerged snag but an easy paddle with some maneuvering. No portages encountered at this time but this river is constantly changing and new downfall is common.
